Being Example

Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; (1 Peter 5:2-3)

Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. (Mat 16:17)

Are you ready to be an example for others?

When I was worked in a plant site, I have some ‘juniors‘ whom I taught. I was responsible to teach the new engineers along with my team about how the plant operated. In spite of how I taught these newbies about plant operations, in one moment I realized that it’s not my only responsibility.

Sometimes I complained about my job, my superiors, the systems, and many other thing. I didn’t realize that this complaining behaviour may impact on the newbies. What will they learn from me if I keep complaining? I guess they will learn to complain also. It’s a bit scary for me, for being watched and modelled by my juniors. However, it’s my responsibility too to be an example for them. Then I started to fix my behaviour. How can I tell my juniors not to complain when I, myself, keep complaining? It’s just the same with most of the parenting style I’ve seen. A smoking father can’t tell his son to stop smoking when he himself still smoking!

Today, St Peter remind us that we should be examples for others (a good example of course😁). We’re not supposed to be “lords” even when we have powerful position of others, but we are supposed to be examples. When you are good examples for your subordinate, hopefully you’ll see that they made you their role models in work.

Then in the Gospel today, Jesus reminds us how can we do good and be a good example for others? Jesus said to St Peter when he answer correctly of Jesus’s question: who the apostles think Jesus is. Jesus said that it’s not the worldly spirit told Peter the right answer, but the Father did. Here Jesus shows us that it’s the Holy Spirit who enables us to say the right words. It’s the Holy spirit of God who assists us to do the good ones.

Bring ourselves closer to God, being obedient of God’s commandments, and do our best to live our lives.

May God pour us with Thy blessings, love, faith, and hope along our life. May the Holy spirit guides us so that we can be the good examples for others. God bless you 😊.
