The Sign of Jonah

And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. (Luke 11:29-30)

And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” (Jonah 3:4)

Have you heard the “sign of Jonah”?

I used to love reading the horoscope. Whenever I got a weekly newspaper or magazine, the first thing I looked for was the zodiac prophecy. I don’t know why I loved it so much, even though I knew that the prophecy can’t do anything with my life. I remember that when I read a good prophecy, I became happier, but in the contrary, if the prophecy wasn’t nice, I was disappointed. Now it’s so funny if I recall that experience, but it was something that quite important for me at that time.

I get it now, why did I love that kind of things. It was because I like the signs. People always look for signs when they go somewhere they aren’t familiar with. They hope the signs can show them the right way. I think it’s the same about what happened in my life. Since I don’t know what my future will be, I like to get any signs of it, which may show me the way I should choose–I hope. However, it’s clear that this kind of sign is not God wants.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus said to the crowd that there will be no sign for those generation, except the sign of Jonah. What is the sign of Jonah? If we read it at the first reading today, we’ll find what sign did Jonah give to the Ninevites. Did Jonah give a sign like a star shined so bright then he said that the Saviour is coming? No. Jonah came to the city and told everyone, “Nineveh will be overthrown!“. Yes, he did that without any prologue or expected signs. Then what’s happened? Did the Ninevites say, “Hey, show us a sign as a proof that God send you to us. Otherwise, we’re not gonna believe in you!
Well, I didn’t know if there were some people said that to Jonah at that time, but what is told in the bible is, the Ninevites repent. Yes, they repent. The sinned, wicked, awful Ninevites repent after they heard Jonah’s saying.

If we compare this situation with what’s happened in Jesus’s era, it’s much different. Jesus came and said, “The Kingdom of God is coming.” Jesus healed the sick, rised the death, casted the devil away. What thing had Jesus not done? However, still the people asked Him for signs. Well, I think it’s just the time when those people should remember what happened with Nineveh after Jonah came.

My dear friend, maybe we’re not seeking those “sign“, but aren’t we? Sometimes I realized that I also seek the “sign” for something. If he is my soul mate, he’ll do this or say that. If this is the perfect job for me, it will be like this or like that. If this house should be mine, it will happened like this. Well, so many signs I have looked for but for what. People may ask us, “If you are a real Christian, you should be able to heal the sick.” or “If your God is truly God, ask your God to stop this rain!” and so long. Hmf. Don’t we get tired of these askings?

People are searching for signs when the signs are actually surround them. The sun is rising, the rain still fall. The wind blows. The tree makes its fruit. The flower blossoms. Aren’t these the signs that this earth still exist? We breath, we can see. We heard the noise, we can taste the food. We can feel the pain. Aren’t these the signs that we’re still alive?

The signs we’re looking for is already there, around us. Be thankful if we can realize it. Last thing to say, being alive is not about searching the signs. Live is about living it, being aware of it, being thankful for it. Jesus said the sign will come as the sign of Jonah. Jesus reminds us that the Kingdom if God is coming. Repent, do good, put away our bad habits and go closer to God. The signs have been already there. Have we realized it?

May God bless us with more faith, hope, love, and awareness of the signs God already given us everyday. God bless you 😊.
