Be Holy

Today’s first reading from Leviticus 18:1-2, 11-18. It is about God’s commands to the Israelites, which were spoken through Moses. The commands were started with this saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. (Leviticus 19:1-2)

This verse is taken from a parable Jesus said to His disciples about a king who separated the righteous from the wicked (Mat 25:31-46). Here is the King’s saying to the wicked:

Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ (Matthew 25:45)

What is it mean to be holy?

I used to be an apathetic person. I didn’t care if my school mates are sick. I didn’t have any idea to visit their house or even pray for them. As long as it has no issue with my life, I won’t do anything. Then as I grown up, I started to understand that visiting the sick or imprisoned is not only for them, but it’s for me. Being care to the weak is the easiest way to find God and do something for God. How can it be? Because God is there, in the form of those who sick and suffer. When we serve them, we serve God. No wonder many people shared their experiences after serving the poor or visiting the suffer, saying that they became happier and more positive.

Today’s reading told us to be holy. What is it mean to be holy? Should we died protecting our faith? Should we spread Gospel to the entire world? Should we feed thousands of people? No, we shouldn’t do that. It’s amazing if we can do that, but to be holy just means that we have to care for others.

Jesus reminds us today, that whatever we didn’t do for those who need, we didn’t do it for God. Let me remind us again, it’s not about how big our action. It’s our heart which God see. When we are able to do something good, but we don’t do it, it’s definitely not holy.

I often feel this way; just because of my ego, I didn’t do something good when I actually able to do it. One simple example was today at the train station. I was sitting at a desk when two elders stand near ne. I knew they want to sit side by side, and if only I shift myself just one desk, they can sit together. But how awful I was for not giving them the seat. I didn’t shift my seat because I thought, they didn’t ask for it, so why should I bother? But then few minutes later I feel guilty of what happened.

See, this is a simple experience from me. To care for other people, to suppress our ego, sometimes not easy.

However, it is clear that God wants us to be holy, just like God Himself is Holy. God has shown us the way: it’s so simple. Care for others, do kindness as far as you can. Try from simple things and see how these change your heart. I have told about my experience visiting the prisoner, but now I think I should learn more to care for small things around me.

Also remember the grace you have now, is given by God, not only for yourself, but also for the entire world.

May God equipped us with more caring heart so that wherever we are we can do kindness for others, as we do it for God. God bless you 😊.
